Yesterday (Monday, May 20th, 2013) was definitely not your usual day for people of the Greater Oklahoma City area. I am sure that by now you are aware of the tornado that swept through a southern OKC suburb yesterday. The area now being called ground zero is about 10 miles south of where we live. I was born and raised in Oklahoma City, where tornadoes were quite common growing up. In my first 19 years I never experienced one but my brother would climb on to the roof of our 2 story flat top house to see one. (Not the best idea.) Technology has improved the ability to track a storm, see a tornado form on television, watching Doppler radar and various other technologies to help keep everyone informed and safe.

Yesterday after lunch I was up in my studio (which is an above garage area) with the computer on. It was a very nice day, clear skies and everything seemed normal but then I heard a clap of thunder in the distance. I thought to myself that maybe I should shut the computer down lest it be struck with electric charge. But I thought it may not be as bad as I originally thought. About two minutes later I realized things were changing quickly outside. My wife, Brandi, came up to ask me to move our car into the garage. By the time I got my computer turned off and outside the lightning was striking with strongly defined loud electrical pops in the sky, it was as if someone was holding a gigantic camera flash right over your head triggering bright light. Rain began to pour down but I got the vehicle in the garage and ran inside to safety. After standing for a few minutes I thought to myself to hook up our antenna to the TV (we don’t have cable) to get some news on the storm.

When I turned it on every station was following this cloud formation southwest of OKC by the airport. While watching I could see what was like different fingers trying to emerge downward out of the cloud. It was apparent that a tornado was about to form but not on a direct trajectory toward us. I told Brandi to get the kids ready to leave giving it 5 minutes to see what happens. Within 2 minutes an almost perfect funnel formation was coming down. The previous day we had tornadoes north of us where the formation was not nearly as defined but that tornado still ended up being a mile wide. Yesterday’s tornado inception had already far exceeded what I had seen the day before. At that point we decided to head north. We went to my mother’s home far north of the storm. By the time we arrived there it was already over a mile wide and later found out it was two miles wide as certain points. As we watched on TV the entire cloud from which the tornado had come was being controlled by the vortex, spinning with it.

“Weather officials estimated the strength of the storm to be an F4 or F5 on the Fujita Scale—the highest rating a tornado can achieve. The National Weather Service said the tornado’s preliminary classification was an F4, with winds up to 200 mph.”

From what I’ve heard this tornado was ranked possibly in the top 5 in history. Regardless, many lives were lost and many families are still hoping to find their loved ones. Please take time to pray for the people of the Greater OKC Area that God would draw people to Himself giving peace, hope and assurance in His love.

1 John 3:8
“The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.”

At the foundation of our thinking we need to realize that God’s ultimate goal is the Kingdom Invasion of heaven on earth. The reason being is that everything that we associate as heaven’s activity on earth is bound up within His kingdom rule. Whether we are speaking of miracles, signs, wonders, the harvest of souls any other thing that demonstrates the life of God in the earth. When we speak of the Kingdom of God, we need to know that we are speaking of God Himself invading the earth with power, destroying the works of the devil through us.

Interceding Between Heaven and Earth

Romans 8:26-27
“Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.”

Our intercession plays a central role in ushering in the reality of heaven on earth. Knowing that Jesus ever lives to intercede for the saints, we also intercede along with Him through the Holy Spirit within us. Why does the Spirit within us long to intercede for the saints? Why not the entire world? He is interceding for us that we would manifest the Father’s glory in the earth the very same way that He did. Together, as the Body of Christ, we manifest the greater works that Jesus spoke of because we are walking in unison with His heart as habitations of God’s Presence in the earth.

Holy Spirit Cultivated Life

As those who are standing for that very purpose of His heart, we are able to “strike the mark” through our intercession. As we play this role the Holy Spirit’s life is cultivated in us in a way that we live in an abiding connection with the heart of God. We ourselves are affected by His life as well as those around us. His rule is being extended through us organically. This is not about any kind of mechanically defined hierarchy, but is something living and dynamic in it’s expression through us. Passion and hunger for God are imparted to us without boundaries.

Receiving the Spirit of Intercession

Hebrews 7:25
“Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.”

I think most everyone who claims to be His would also desire to want to be like Jesus. There are many things that could be said about Him and the place He now holds in the heavens. God highlights what He is doing right now, interceding. For us to fully enter into what Christ desires we need to open our hearts to receive the spirit of intercession. As we allow Him to pour this aspect of His life into our spirit we will experience a greater oneness with His heart, seeing things as He sees and have the opportunity to carry the compassion with Kingdom demonstration that He carried in the earth.

You don’t have to live the Christian life too long before you may experience a “law laden mindset” in someone. This can be one of the most confusing issues that we come across in Christianity and can be found in so many different forms.  Everyone is at a different place in their walk with God but it is possible for someone to get off course. At the heart of it is a life that has come to Christ, but has not completely renewed the mind in the truth that sets people free. It is like a person gets saved by God’s grace, then lives by the law. Our transformation comes inside-out, not by working on externals. God wants us to continue to live by faith, trusting in His grace (His ability within us) and goodness.

Truth & Law

For one, truth and law are not the same. Truth is a Person, the law is something that God gave that was part of an inferior covenant. Truth is that which is “living” and flows from the heart and mind of God, imparting “life” rather than something dead going nowhere. Understanding the law, it has no power of it’s own except to kill apart from the Spirit. The law is good when” the Spirit awakens it” in our hearts, but dead if it is only a list that we are following. In other words, the law can be living truth when the Spirit breathes the revelation of it in our hearts. But it cannot transform, but only kill on it’s own. (2 Cor. 3:6) The fruit of living by the law is condemnation, fear and guilt. The fruit of living by God’s truth by the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness and intimacy with the Father. (Gal. 5:22) The law was and is not able to produce good fruit. The law is good for your library (your mind), but is not transformational. Just as the Word of God is dead without the Spirit, so our study apart from the Holy Spirit’s help is vain. The Holy Spirit is the author of The Book. Just as the “teachers of the law” and “religious leaders” knew the law inside out but rejected Jesus Christ, so it is with anyone who with God.

Don’t Hurt Yourself, Lose Yourself

A plan is only as good as the person who inspired it. We need to train people to change directions, lifting their eyes up to see Him and in abide in Him. Only God’s power, Presence and Spirit are able to make a life new. There is only one way that we are transformed into Christ’s image, by beholding the face of Christ. It is important that believers learn that experience with God is part of their inheritance in Christ. Through a life that is engaged in intimate connection with God we are changed or “fixed”. Our lives are not changed through our “self-focus”, but through having lost our lives in His Presence. When He died, we died. It is finished.

Colossians 3:2
“Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”

There is no other method that works. When our mind is renewed in His truth by the Holy Spirit, the image of God will be refreshed in our lives. The reality of what Christ achieved on the cross is realized and implemented in our lives through revelation by the Spirit. Don’t hurt yourself by trying to fix yourself, but lose yourself by keeping Your focus on Him. It really is an “oxymoron”. The very thing you think will fix you actually makes things worse. By taking your eyes off yourself and putting your focus on the Lord you will be changed!

Spiritual Perfectionism

What about legalism? Where does it come from? How does it affect people? Legalism can come in so many forms. There are more obvious forms that we think of that come in completely “dry” places of religion. But there is also the “spiritual perfection” expression of legalism that can come in a charismatic/pentecostal package. What can make this so confusing is where you have some aspect of God’s Presence in the midst of people, but the foundation of thinking is not rooted in the grace of God. This is why “how we think” is so important. “Watchdogs” rule by fear, intimidation and condemnation. (Galatians 2:4) Those who are influenced by this mindset wind up caught in fear, shame and condemnation – rather than experiencing the freedom, life, peace and joy Jesus came to give us.

Philippians 3:2
“Look out for the dogs, look out for the evildoers, look out for those who mutilate the flesh. For we are the circumcision, who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh.”

The Imperfect Church

The fact is that God takes people where they are. As we look at the 7 churches in the Book of Revelation, there are those that lack certain things. Then there are churches that have certain things. God praises churches for what they have, but then rebukes them for what they don’t – warning them that they will lose their lamp stand if they don’t change. At last, He gives them this incentive: “to him who overcomes” with a promise of reward. It is by the grace of God that we stand. The gospel we have been entrusted with is “the gospel of His kingdom and grace”. We don’t have two gospels, but one. It is “good news” through Jesus Christ; His Spirit of grace and power manifesting the rule of God in the earth through us. We don’t have a gospel of kingdom and law, but of heaven on earth with great grace. It is foundational for us to be filled with the Spirit of grace. (Matt. 4:23. Acts 20:24)

2 Timothy 2:1
“Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.”

Embracing the Easy Yoke of Jesus

Matthew 11:30
“For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Perfectionism and legalism go hand in hand. Perfectionists can easily lose sight of grace, love and mercy. Legalism is created in different ways. Legalism is a lie, a thought, a man-made law or way of doing things that is imposed upon others to bring them underneath a heavy yoke of bondage. Jesus came to release people from heavy burdens. He described the Pharisees and religious leaders as those who put heavy burdens upon others without carrying these burdens themselves, basically slave-drivers. The yoke of Jesus is “easy” and His burden is “light”. No heavy burdens are allowed in His kingdom. Heavy burdens have nothing to do with freedom but are oppressive implements man has created.

The foundation of our thinking needs to be laid with grace, mercy and truth. This is the foundation for freedom that the Holy Spirit will rest on. Take time to make sure you are taking on the “easy yoke” that Jesus died for. God does not indwell you to hold you down, but to lift you up in His peace and glory.

God desires for us to be living a life of breakthrough. I’ve heard it said that what is better than a miracle is breakthrough. This is the truth. When we live in breakthrough then we become the conduits of miracles, more than being recipients. Jesus never needed a miracle for He lived in a higher place as a man filled with the Spirit. He lived the perfect life. He was a vehicle used to perform miracles. Jesus lived with an open heaven over His life walking in union with God.

Something in Us That Says “Not Enough!”

Genesis 32:24
“And Jacob was left alone. And a man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day. When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he touched his hip socket, and Jacob’s hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. Then he said, “Let me go, for the day has broken.” But Jacob said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”

The Lord looks for something in us that will not settle for less than His best, His blessing. Jacob had this desperation in his life. He would not let go until the Lord blessed him.

2 Timothy 1:6
“For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.”

 We need to learn to wrestle with God, press in to the reality of His Presence. We don’t need to wait for something to happen. Instead we need to stir that which God has already put inside of us. It is our hunger and thirst for Him that will break us into a greater reality of His glory.

 
Place of Spill Over

When we learn to live in breakthrough we move ourselves into a place of blessing and overflow, spilling over into the lives of others. we can be greater blessing to others lives when we live in breakthrough. The beginning to living in breakthrough is found in our own times with God. The keys to our personal breakthrough can look different for each individual although there will be some common methods. There may be one thing that helps you in particular to breakthrough. Every day may look a little different. It’s important to stay flexible to how your breakthrough is achieved even though you will have all your weapons available.

Here are some weapons of breakthrough:

1. Worship, praise and thanksgiving
I almost always begin here. Although there are exceptions. We are to be continually offering our praise to God. It is a huge key to breakthrough. The extra note is “with thanksgiving”. Our heart attitude plays a major role in breakthrough. Thanksgiving is the good foundation to entering into the “spirit of worship”. Otherwise we will just be spouting empty worthless words.

The “new song” is a powerful weapon of breakthrough for our lives. God sings songs of deliverance over us. When we tap into those songs we experience this deliverance by His Spirit.

As well, be free in regards to how to express your love for God in worship. Dance, flags, instruments and other all help to engage the entirety of our being in worship. Don’t just sit. David danced with all of His might before God. Sometimes our outward expression is a sign of whether we are really enjoying and experiencing the freedom we have in Christ.

2. The Word of God
When I receive a revelation word from God, whether it be a dream or something I’m getting in my heart, I then study out of the written Word. This solidifies the foundation of what you have received. Then we also study the Word then revelation follows. It works both ways.

3. Revelation
Asking the Holy Spirit to pour out the spirit of revelation and wisdom will help us to breakthrough. When we are receiving His words they cannot be taken away. His words break up the ground of our hearts making us ready for His will. This is our conversation with God. We speak to Him, but now He speaks to us. Remember that God always has something to say and show us, the question is “are we listening?” Dreams, visions and the inner voice are all ways God speaks to us.

4. Prayer: Spirit and Understanding
When we pray with our spirit or in tongues, it accelerates our strength within. We are building up our most holy faith. Our spirit needs attention being strengthened by our active communion with God.

5. Soaking in God’s Presence
We need to make a habit of getting quiet before God, still all the noise of voices and the soul. Our society is geared to be noisy with busyness as the gauge of whether you are accomplishing anything. We need to be committed to just soak in God’s Presence. Turn on some instrumental music and meditate on scripture, praying in the spirit. Let the emphasis be on what God does in you, not what you do.

Note

If you are trying to soak in God’s Presence but don’t feel a thing, it may be that you need to try a different weapon, breakthrough and then just receive by soaking in His Presence. Sometimes soaking comes easy, other times not. When you go through your days many times you can pick up stuff from other sources that need to be broken off. Take some authority over these things, break unholy agreements that you have come into in your own mind and etc. Then spend some time in worship and thanksgiving. It is usually in the times where you are not experiencing God’s Presence that God will help break you through in another way. The key is to find what helps you experience His Presence in the moment. Once you break through soaking in the Holy Spirit comes easy.
