The Breath of Heaven

John Belt

Genesis 2:7
“And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.

In the beginning we see God breathing into man the very breath of heaven. There is a parallel in the Book of John where Jesus says that unless a man is born of water (natural birth) and the Spirit (spiritual birth) He cannot enter the Kingdom of God. The word in the Greek language that is used for Spirit in this passage is pneuma that refers to a current of air, a breath-blast or a breeze. Our beginnings of life whether in natural life or in spiritual life all begin with the breath of God’s Spirit blowing into our lives. His breath awakens us.

We see this picture in the Song of Songs:

Song of Songs 4:16
“Awake, O north wind,
And come, O south!
Blow upon my garden,
That its spices may flow out.
Let my beloved come to his garden
And eat its pleasant fruits.

In this verse the writer is using the Hebrew word “ruah” for blow meaning to puff, blow with the breath or air, to fan (as a breeze), to utter, to kindle (a fire), blow (upon), puff, speak or utter. Just as our beginnings start with God, we must continue to have His breath, the wind of God’s Spirit blowing upon our lives that we may bear pleasant fruit to His glory. It is the breath of God’s Presence, the wind of the Spirit or the air of heaven that is needed so that we may carry the weight of His Presence in our lives. God has bigger plans for you. He does not want you to merely exist, taking up space. He desires you to flourish in His life and blessing.

Psalm 92:13
“Those who are planted in the house of the Lord
Shall flourish in the courts of our God.
They shall still bear fruit in old age;
They shall be fresh and flourishing.

The house of the Lord represents the place of His Presence. When David refers to the “house of the Lord”, his reference point is His life experience in the Presence of God. The Lord’s Presence gives us a real reason for being in a place. The air of God’s Presence gives us life just as we would not physically live without air to breathe.

I love the song, “Breathe”. Many of you have heard the song. The line is “this is the air I breathe” Your holy Presence living in me. The atmosphere of heaven is the air that we breathe, the breath of the Spirit is what causes us to awaken to God and to the things of God. Everything that God has placed in order, everything that He has released for our spiritual engagement He desires us to be awakened to. If we are finding our contentment in any other thing then we are missing the fullness of what He has designed for us.

Ask?the Lord to breathe in you the fresh air of heaven awakening your spirit to life filled with His Presence.

Job 33:4
“The Spirit of God has made me,
And the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
