The Spiritual Engine of Intercession

John Belt

Intercession is the spiritual engine of our lives that enables God to do what He, in most cases, will not do without it.

Our intercession bridges the gap between heaven and earth to allow the manifestation of God?s Kingdom in our present time. The Lord calls us to the place of intercession continually. It is not something He turns off and on.

Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, yes, who is risen, who is also at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.

Romans 8:34

It is a matter of tapping into the reality that Jesus is continually engaged in this intercession for His people. He ever lives to intercede for us, the saints. If we want to get close to the heart of God then we have to embrace a life of intercession.

The life of intercession is for every saint. To live outside this realm of God’s reality is to live short of your calling.

Intercession is foundational for our lives, just as it is foundation to be a person of the Word of God or to live a life of worship. It is the life of prayer that is continually connected to the heart of God and His purposes in effect to see the will of God done in the earth.

To be a person of the Holy Spirit our lives should be given to intercession. The Spirit knows how to intercede and intervene to bring the His desires to pass.

The Dual Effect of Intercession

Likewise, the Spirit helps us in our weaknesses, for we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

Romans 8:26-27

We see in this verse that the Holy Spirit wants to even bridge the gap in our own lives. He knows our weaknesses. This is not only weakness in not knowing what to pray for others but for knowing how to pray for ourselves. He is the Helper that wants to help us.

Have you needed any help lately? Get in connection with the Holy Spirit through a life of intercession. Through intercession we reap what we sow.

As we allow the Holy Spirit to pray through us He begins filling in the gaps of our own lives as well as the lives of others around us. There is a dual-effect in our intercession where we instantly reap of the benefits of a life given over to prayer.

Intercession is also key to igniting the fire of His Presence in our lives.

The Holy Spirit knows how to bypass our natural mind, that typically hinders us apart from the Spirit, to expedite the process in our hearts.

The Spirit is the River of God that washes us with the pure water of heaven to cleanse our souls from all that contaminates. This is why its is such safeguard to learn how to pray in the Holy Spirit, letting Him intercede through us with His perfect prayer. Through His washing process we bring our soul into a place where the fire of God’s Presence can dwell in our lives, where our hearts are ignited with heaven’s glory.

Reclaiming the Well of His Presence

But you, beloved, build yourselves up in your most holy faith. Pray in the Holy Spirit.

Jude 1:20

As our hearts are lit with prayer the fire of the Spirit awakens us to God, opening our eyes of faith to a fresh reality of Who He is. This is why intercession plays such an important role to revival, not only in our personal lives, but also in our corporate expression. Engaging together in intercession we realize a power and glory that is much greater – enabling God to manifest heaven on earth where people are affected in the corporate gatherings.

Isaac dug again the wells of water, which they had dug in the days of Abraham his father, for the Philistines had stopped them up after the death of Abraham. He called their names after the names his father had called them.

Genesis 26:18

Intercession is a key to your personal breakthrough!

The very first place the enemy tries to hinder is your prayer life. This encompasses your communion with God, prayer for others and more simply your connection with the Holy Spirit.

Just like the Philistines stopped up the wells in time of Issac, so the first thing the enemy tries to shut down is your spirit. Isaac had to re-open those wells. This is a picture of the resolve we need to have in our relationship with God, how we must press in to open up the well of the Spirit in our hearts when the enemy tries to oppress, hinder and shut down the flow of the Spirit in our lives.

Get your name back. You are a well of God’s glory. Re-establish the well of God’s Presence in your life through intercession, reclaiming your true identity and purpose in the Lord. Allow God to awaken intercession in your life, where the Holy Spirit if free to pray through you to the washing and igniting of your own soul, that His fire would burn continually as you give yourself in surrender to His glory.

  1. Great word John. I find the secret of tarrying and waiting on God is to be elated and thrilled just being in His Presence. Im finding benefit in waiting for greater waves of His Glory and getting giddy in anticipation between each wave of His love and presence.

  2. Looking back on my faith journey I can honestly say God was preparing me from the time I was a child for a life of prayer…and I didn’t really begin to start living until I surrendered to be a”knee” in the body of Christ. Some 30 years later I am sincerely “living the dream” of constant fellowship and communication with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit as we do life together. He is always teaching me something new and I am grateful He led me to use John Belt music as a background for prayer. When I need help to focus more on heavenly things than earthly things. I can kick some serious devil butt while praying to “Heaven’s Thunder”, “Lion Dance” and “Warrior”. Thanks so much for all you do for Him and the Kingdom!

  3. WOW, thank you so much for this word. This explains why I have been constantly hindered by a spirit of lethargy! I now know how to pray against it so I can continue to be a watchman on the wall for The Lord! Thank you!
